The profession has many benefits. It’s a very flexible job, you can work your own hours and you have opportunities to explore and work anywhere in the world, meeting new people from all walks of life and experience many different cultures.

So, who wants to be a massage therapist?  Wouldn’t you? Well you will have to go through the formal training to be qualified. And these are the steps you will need to follow to become a massage therapist in USA.


Step 1

The first step is you! Are you someone that’s easy to work with? Are you comfortable with touching someone else in a professional manner? Are you a “people’s person? These are all key questions you need to answer.

Also consider the following if you are to enroll in a program, will you have:

  • Do you have funding to pay for your studies?
  • Do you have time available to attend classes?
  • Sufficient time to complete your course homework?
  • Can you complete at least 500 hours of training?

Step 2

Choosing the training institution is very important. Before doing this it is important to do your research on your prospective institution. Visit a few websites of institutions to see what they offer. Also enquire from students and teachers. Consult student advisors of the relevant institutions. Gain as much information as possible in order to make the right decision for you!

The institution that you choose should have a curriculum approved by the  Board of Massage Therapy.  You will be required to complete approved curriculum that will be at least 500 hours long. This will cover all approved Western massage techniques.

You may also consider purchasing your own massage table to practice the techniques on willing participants. Only purchase recommended equipment as the wrong equipment could impair your ability to apply the correct pressure when performing massages.

You will be learning a variety of massage techniques during your training. These include Swedish, deep tissue, orthopedic, cross fiber, and neuromuscular massage therapy. Your training will equip you to be able to perform physical assessments of your clients in order to identify the key areas to be addressed during the massage therapy sessions.

After all the training you will be in a position to determine in which fields you would like to specialize in.


Step 3

Once you have completed the message therapy training you will be required to pass one of two exams which is approved by the  Board of Message Therapy.

  • The Massage Board Licensing Exam (MBLEx) can be written at the Federation of the State Massage Therapy Boards. This exam tests that a massage therapist can practice massage therapy safely and in an effective manner in a public setting.
  • The National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork offers two certification exams. Both of these exams tests the national standards required to be upheld by a massage therapist.

The results and outcomes of these exams will be evaluated by the Board of Massage Therapy. Applicants who qualify to become licensed massage therapists will be required to complete 24 hours of continuous education training within each renewal period.
